Daniel Vettori reflects with awe and amazement at Twenty20's inexorable march to prominence. It was only four years ago that Vettori took the field at Eden Park for the inaugural Twenty20 international against Australia dressed in a skin-tight beige uniform and towelling hat, and sporting sideburns and a handlebar moustache.

That match, which Australia won by 44-runs due largely to Ricky Ponting's unbeaten 98, was viewed as a novelty by both sides. But when Australia and New Zealand stride onto the SCG for Sunday's 20-over international - just the third contested between the sides - all players will be performing under the eye of national selectors ahead of this year's Twenty20 World Cup and, more lucratively, before scores of Indian Premier League scouts.

Australia avoided handing back the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy in Sydney but a New Zealand win in Adelaide would be enough for the prize to change hands, while Australia could level at 2-2. Ricky Ponting's impassioned plea to the selectors to allow him to return to the side instead of resting indicated how seriously he takes the series and after Australia lost the prize in 2006-07 when he also sat out, he was desperate for the situation not to repeat itself.

Australia (possible) 1 Michael Clarke, 2 Brad Haddin (wk), 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 David Hussey, 5 Michael Hussey, 6 Cameron White, 7 Callum Ferguson, 8 James Hopes, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Nathan Bracken, 11 Ben Hilfenhaus/Peter Siddle.

Brendon McCullum was scheduled to have scans on Monday on his right shoulder after being struck by a rearing Kyle Mills delivery while standing up to the stumps. McCullum had pain-killing injections and dropped down to No. 9 but he was still able to strike a quick 36, giving the New Zealanders hope that he might be fit for Tuesday. The back-up wicketkeeper Gareth Hopkins has been flown in as cover and McCullum said that while he was desperate to play, he would leave the decision until his injury had been assessed. "I always want to play and take the aggressive attitude and take the field," McCullum told NZPA on Monday. "But you've also got to do the sensible thing, and until such time as we get the actual information about what is going on, it's hard to make any sort of judgment."

New Zealand (possible) 1 Brendon McCullum (wk), 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Peter Fulton, 4 Ross Taylor, 5 Grant Elliott, 6 Neil Broom, 7 Kyle Mills, 8 Daniel Vettori (capt), 9 Tim Southee, 10 Jeetan Patel, 11 Iain O'Brien.

Australia's stand-in captain and makeshift opener Michael Clarke was in charge of another shaky innings at the MCG, where a sharp New Zealand picked off three wickets after sending Australia in. At the halfway mark, Clarke was unbeaten on 47 and he had support from the vice-captain Michael Hussey on 15.

Without Shaun Marsh, who has a hamstring injury, and the resting Ricky Ponting, Australia's top order undertook some enforced renovations. Clarke opened with David Warner, Brad Haddin was bumped up to No. 3 and David Hussey came in next but apart from Clarke's promotion, none of the moves worked terribly well.

New Zealand have been dealt two injury concerns before their one-day series in Australia with Jesse Ryder and Brendon McCullum both suffering problems during training in Canberra on Wednesday. Ryder will miss Thursday's warm-up match against the Prime Minister's XI after aggravating a shoulder injury.

The trouble with his rotator cuff had affected Ryder in New Zealand and flared up again at the team's net session. He will have an MRI scan on Wednesday night to determine whether a replacement player needs to be flown in for the ODI series, which begins in Perth on Sunday.

Gareth Hopkins has already been called on to join the squad in Perth after McCullum sustained a minor hip injury. McCullum responded well to physio treatment after training and is likely to play in Canberra, although it is not clear how much time he will be able to spend behind the stumps.

New Zealand's problems have been complicated by the fact that Ryder was the designated wicketkeeping reserve in the existing squad. Ryan Carters, a gloveman who has represented the Australian Capital Territory Under-19s, has been placed on standby in case New Zealand require a substitute wicketkeeper against the Prime Minister's XI.

New Zealand are already below full strength for the five-match ODI series with the allrounder Jacob Oram unavailable due to injury. The Prime Minister's XI will be captained by Justin Langer and features some players hoping to impress Australia's national selectors, including the in-form batsmen Phillip Hughes and Michael Klinger.
